How do you know when it’s time to replace your old menu boards? It might seem like it should be obvious, but once you get used to seeing something day in and day out, you don’t tend to notice the gradual changes that take it from clean and new to aging and dirty. So what should you be looking for?
Start by checking out pictures of the signage from when it was first installed, if you have any. Are things starting to look dirty or tired compared to before? Sure, you might just be due for a good dusting, but if the sign is starting to show wear and tear that can’t be erased by Windex, it might be time to consider an upgrade.
If you don’t have old pictures, try inviting a second pair of eyes—someone who hasn’t seen the sign in a while, or is seeing it for the first time. Make sure they know they can be honest with you, and ask them for their opinion on how things are looking! (If you don’t have the pictures because they were lost along with a computer that ran Windows 98, it might be time to upgrade regardless.)
Another issue, largely unrelated to normal wear and tear, is simply difficulty of use. If you find yourself (or your handyman) having to regularly break out the toolbox to change signage, it might be time for something that’s just plain easier. Digital signage can often be updated remotely, and other options like magnetic signage can make for a much easier time when you want to change out specials or sales.
Your old signage might have some emotional significance for you—maybe you posed next to it your first day on the job, or had it installed at the last moment just before opening day—but like all good things, it has to come to an end eventually. And hey, no one’s saying you can’t take one last picture before it goes.
