3 Common Signage Pitfalls

If you are looking into purchasing signage for your business for the first time, you might not know exactly what you’re doing, and that’s fine! But if you want to keep from wasting money and time, it’s important to have some kind of plan before setting out. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the most common pitfalls for first-time signage seekers.

If you don’t know what you want, not only are well-meaning companies going to struggle with helping you, but companies that are less scrupulous can easily take advantage of you.  It is important to figure out what you’re looking for. Nothing good can come from letting someone else make the big choices for you.

2. Being too specific about design. If you are hiring someone to do design work for your signage, it’s important to have a strong set of objectives in place, but once you’ve agreed on a plan, remember that the designer is the expert.  They know how to make their work look good, so it’s important to balance the amount of direction. Ideally, you would give your designer a framework based on your objectives, but give them a little bit of creative leeway so they can use their expertise to give you the best product they can.

3. Choosing the wrong type of signage. Think hard about your needs before you make a final decision. Digital or traditional? Small or larger? If you’re considering adding more to your signage later, look at getting a sign that will allow you to add “wings” or other additions with extra information. If you think you’ll want to switch to digital soon, don’t waste money on traditional signage first—go straight for digital, and you’ll save in the long run.
